Do You Need Polarized Glasses?

Many anglers wonder if they need polarized glasses. Then they probably purchase themselves an inexpensive pair, and this very well, may effect them forever. I know it did me. Cheap polarized glasses give a bad impression to quality polarized glasses, it’s as simple as that. I know once I finally broke down and bought myself a pair of quality polarized glasses, my fishing has never been the same. The level of clarity that they provide, both looking into the water and out of the water, is hard to put into words. It’s really something that needs to be experienced. Not only that, but quality polarized glasses look good as well, whereas cheap ones usually make you look like you just stepped off the turnip truck.

For many years I refused to pay more than $25 for a pair of polarized glasses, and for that reason (although I didn’t know it at the time) I never liked polarized glasses. They distorted my vision, scratched easily, and made me look like an idiot. But they were supposedly great for fishing so, I would wear them only while fishing. Until which time that I got so fed up that I’d finally throw them out and buy another pair of $25 pair of polarized glasses, hoping that they would work better. Guess what? They never did.

Then one day my fishing buddy finally got tired of me complaining about my polarized glasses and let me borrow his. They were incredible. I could see so well, and they cut through the glare better than I though was possible. Not only did they work well, but I looked pretty good in them as well. This little incident sold me, and within a week I had purchased my own quality pair of polarized glasses. I figured I would break down and invest the money because not only would I use then for fishing, I would also wear them as my sun glasses. I spent $100 on them and that was 5 years ago.

I was thinking about this the other day and realized that if you amortize the cost of my quality polarized glasses they cost me the same as those pieces of crap that I used to buy. I found out that if that amount of money is invested in   sunglasses , you take great care of them, so they last a long time. I know my quality polarized glasses are probably the best investment I’ve ever made as far as what I got for the money I invested. I can’t imagine fishing without them.
